About Mr. Irey
Professional Information:
My name is Doug Irey (Douglas) and am originally from Farmington Hills, MI. After I graduated Farmington Harrison High School I enrolled in Michigan State University in pursuit of a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies in Social Science (IDS) and a degree in History as well. At the start of my Sophomore year I applied to the College of Education for Secondary Education, which was something that I had been inspired to do when I was in 8th grade; being accepted was the culmination of 5 years of hard work and anticipation. I graduated in the Spring of 2011 with two majors IDS, with a Specialization in International Studies and a Cognate in Economics, as well as a second degree in History.
After graduating I finished the Secondary Education program at Michigan State where I completed my internship at Cass Technical High School in Detroit, MI. During my year as a Technician I taught Freshman 19-20th Century United States History. While at Cass I encountered a diverse student body with a variety of learners with differing strengths and difficulties. It was with my students and fellow faculty at Cass where I learned how to utilize technology in new and engaging ways and gain an appreciation for what it is like to become a part of the larger school community that is Detroit Public Schools.
Recently I graduated from Michigan State University where I completed a Masters Degree in Special Education with an endorsement in Learning Disabilities.
Personal Facts:
I swam competitively from 1993-2006 culminating my swimming career with the Harrison-Farmington High School Phoenix, where I was a four-year letter recipient, three-year State Qualifier and captain my Senior year. It was through swimming and school that I developed my work ethic and respect for others, including people of differing abilities. After retiring from swimming I have helped to guide other young swimmers through the training process, to compete and place at the State level and have held positions as a Swim Coach at Walled Lake Northern High School (both boys and girls), the Co-Ed Clifford Smart/Walnut Creek Middle School Teams, the Lake Area Tridents (in Commerce Township), and Western Golf and Country Club (in Redford, Michigan).
For the past 15 summers I have worked at both Western Golf and Country Club in Redford, Michigan (Head Lifeguard- 2004-2011) and Edgewood Country Club in Commerce, Michigan (Pool Director- 2012-Present). At both clubs I was in charge of the day to day operations of the pool and I built many professional and personal relationships both in and out of the pool.
I am interested in Classic Cars, Michigan State Athletics, Detroit Red Wings Hockey, and Lions Football. Some of my favorite shows are NCIS, Pawn Stars, American Pickers, Graceland, The Last Ship and re-runs of Boy Meets World.
My top three favorite US cities to visit are Boston, Washington DC, and Venice, FL.
